Looking for 2 experienced Azure DevOps contractors to work on a major on prem to cloud migration project
Why You’d Like It

If you are an engineer who thrives on human connection just as much as clean code, this approximately 6 month contract in Auckland offers the perfect blend. This is a brilliant opportunity to sink your teeth into a clean-slate, greenfield Azure build and execute a total data centre exit. Based fully on-site, this role lets you step away from isolated remote working and position yourself right at the heart of a high-visibility transformation where your technical impact is seen, heard, and valued every single day.

The Story

A massive infrastructure transformation is officially underway. A major consolidation project is bringing together a network of providers into a single, unified entity, requiring a complete overhaul of the current technology footprint. The immediate mission is clear: migrate legacy workloads out of an on-premise IaaS data centre and into a brand-new, modern cloud environment.

With a strict execution window, an experienced engineer is needed to hit the ground running and drive this migration safely across the finish line.
Company Profile The organisation is a prominent tertiary education provider in Auckland, currently navigating an exciting phase of structural integration.

Backed by a highly focused, objective-driven CIO and a steadfast Project Manager, the internal culture is resilient, professional, and deeply relationship-driven. The engineering team values collaboration over working in silos, regularly running interactive sessions to share knowledge and ensure the team is moving at pace.

Your Role

Working alongside an established delivery team including an internal Project Manager, an Architect, and peer engineers, the responsibilities include:
  • Conducting initial discovery of the existing on-premise footprint to pinpoint cloud optimisation opportunities.
  • Deploying all brand-new Azure cloud resources entirely via Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Utilising Terraform and Git to build out the cloud environment safely and efficiently.
  • Leveraging, adapting, and reusing existing code templates to maintain high project velocity.
  • Executing the lift-and-shift of legacy workloads out of the physical data centre using cloud migration tools.
  • Handling occasional manual or physical deployment elements where immediate automation isn't viable.
  • Collaborating closely with peer engineers and operating comfortably within strict corporate change control processes.
Benefits

This contract positions you as a key driver in a large-scale migration, adding a substantial greenfield project to your portfolio. Working fully on-site ensures you build strong, face-to-face relationships with influential, personality-oriented stakeholders and focused leadership. Looking ahead, once the initial migration stabilises, the project roadmap transitions into an exciting application modernisation phase, offering great technical interest for the duration of the project.

Your Fit

The ideal candidate will bring the following skills and attributes:
  • Proven commercial experience building greenfield Azure environments from scratch via Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Strong technical proficiency with Terraform and Git.
  • Hands-on experience migrating legacy, on-premise data centre workloads into Azure infrastructure using cloud migration utilities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a genuine preference for face-to-face collaboration and relationship building.
  • A resilient, professional mindset capable of working effectively under tight timeframes and rigid change control settings.
  • Foundational knowledge of or exposure to containerisation technologies is a plus, though not required for day one.
Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand. If you are not a NZ Citizen, you must have the right of permanent residence or a valid work visa.
