Join an amazing organisation as a Senior Data Scientist. Directly impact success. Small but highly successful company.

Why You’d Like It

If you're a Senior Data Scientist who's keen to see their models drive millions in revenue—not just sit in a report—then this role in Auckland is the one for you. This is a highly impactful, front-office commercial powerhouse position where your quantitative rigour meets the sharp end of the energy trading market.

The Story

This is a key strategic, permanent hire driven by the successful commercialisation of a core data science project. The team is now looking to significantly expand its algorithmic trading capabilities across the wider Asia-Pacific region. They need a seasoned quantitative expert to step in and immediately help build and refine the next generation of real-time market forecasting models. You won't just maintain existing systems; you’ll be building the future of their trading capability.

Company Profile

Picture a small, high-calibre quantitative firm based in the heart of Auckland Central. These folks are serious about modern data science, putting a 'quant-first' approach at the centre of their operation. They work within the fast-moving wholesale electricity and gas markets, partnering with independent retailers and generators to bring liquidity and competition to the deregulated energy space. The culture is intellectual, high-performance, and deeply commercial—it’s an environment built for people who love seeing their smarts have a tangible, dollar-driven impact.

Your Role
  • Develop and commercialise advanced quantitative models to forecast market fundamentals and price movements in real-time energy markets.
  • Translate complex data insights directly into actionable, revenue-generating trading strategies.
  • Continuously refine and iterate on models, using P&L (profit and loss) impact as the critical financial feedback loop.
  • Collaborate closely with the trading desk to identify and execute on liquidity opportunities for independent market participants.
  • Mentor junior quantitative analysts, sharing your commercial and technical expertise.
Benefits

You'll be compensated with a market-leading salary package and a performance bonus structure that reflects the direct impact of your work. You'll have an immediate opportunity to be a key decision-maker in a boutique setting, moving the needle on company revenue daily. This role offers the best of both worlds: academic-level data rigour with the fast-paced, high-stakes excitement of a commercial trading environment. The position is permanent and based on a hybrid model in Auckland Central.

Your Fit
  • A mandatory Master’s Degree or PhD in a quantitative field like Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, or Engineering.
  • Senior-level experience in Data Science or Quantitative Analysis within a demanding commercial environment.
  • A proven track record of commercialising data science outputs, clearly demonstrating how your work has directly influenced financial results, sales, or trading P&L.
  • Expert proficiency in Python (including libraries like Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn) and SQL for sophisticated quantitative modelling and time-series forecasting.
  • A genuine 'scientist with a trader's mindset'—someone who bridges academic rigour with commercial reality.
  • Prior experience in the Energy/Utilities sector or high-frequency trading is highly advantageous, but not essential.
Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand. If you are not a NZ Citizen, you must have the right of permanent residence or a valid work visa.
