Why You’d Like It
Keen to lead a team but don't want to give up the tools? This is a genuine 'player-coach' opportunity where you'll get to build a brand new development squad from the ground up. You’ll split your time between mentoring your team and staying deep in the code , designing the scalable systems that solve complex, real-world problems.

The Story
This isn't just a new role; it's a chance to build something new. As part of their growth, the business is establishing a new, high impact squad. They need a technical leader to step in, take ownership, and guide this new team of (eventually) four - five engineers. You'll be instrumental in setting the technical direction and creating a culture of engineering best practice from day one.

Your Role
  • Leading, mentoring, and supporting your new squad of software engineers.
  • Playing a key role in recruiting and onboarding new team members.
  • Making significant hands-on contributions to the codebase.
  • Leading the design and build of scalable, secure, and event-driven systems.
  • Driving technical decision-making and architectural discussions.
  • Developing back-end solutions using Java and/or Python.
  • Working extensively with modern AWS services (e.g., Lambda, Kinesis, EventBridge).
  • Managing and provisioning infrastructure as code (Terraform).
  • Collaborating closely with data scientists, researchers, and product managers.
  • Owning and enhancing your squad's CI/CD pipelines, testing, and monitoring.
Your Fit
  • Proven experience as a Lead Software Engineer.
  • A genuine passion for mentoring and guiding other developers.
  • Strong commercial experience in back-end development, particularly with Java or Python.
  • Deep understanding of cloud-native architecture and extensive experience with AWS services.
  • Experience designing and building complex, scalable, event-driven systems.
  • A highly collaborative mindset, natural curiosity, and excellent communication skills.
  • Comfort working with ambiguity and solving messy, complex problems.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code (like Terraform).
